Zambia's Mythical Gemstone.

Zambia produces 20% of the world’s emeralds. Mostly rough export of precious stone like emeralds, Amethyst, Aquamarine, Pink tourmaline and recently discovered Diamond. But one particular stone that caught my attention is the Amethyst crystal, its crystalline quartz in shades of purple and it was traditionally worn to guard against drunkenness and to instill a sober mind. Sounds like something you should carry to the pub right! Many people believe amethyst protect from evil, poison and getting drunk. The name came from a Greek word “Amethustos”, meaning “without being drunk”. It is known to be good for hearing, recovering from headaches, good dreams and more. In fact some Catholic popes also wear it around their neck, some roman women thought the gem could keep their husbands faithful to them (husband’s lookout). The so called “powers” in Amethysts also includes healing, peace, love, more spirituality, courage, protection from robbers and happiness. Some other qualities associated to the stone include:

 HISTORY:  In the legends, there are many stories about amethyst one in particular claims how Amethyst was legendarily created. According to the story, Bacchus, the Roman God of wine and conviviality, was angry because of something against him and wanted revenge. He ordered that the first mortal to come across his path would be eaten by tigers. Just that moment a beautiful maiden named Amethyst came on her way to worship the goddess Diana. Diana saw what was about to happen and she quickly made Amethyst a stone to save her from the tiger, when Bacchus saw this, he repented and poured wine over the stone making its color purple. Ancient Egyptians used Amethyst to guard against guilty and fearful feelings.

·         RELIGION: The Amethyst is very famous for being one of the main Gemstones of Christianity and Catholicism. Some Catholic popes wear amethyst around their neck because they think it makes them look pious and more holy. Also in Christianity the bible talks about a breastplate decorated with jewels worn by Aaron, the most high Priest of the Hebrews. It had 12 jewels on it and the Amethyst was the third stone in the row. The amethyst is known a Bishop’s stone and Is still worn by catholic bishops. The Amethyst symbolizes piety, humility, sincerity and spiritual wisdom.

   HEALING: It is said Amethyst can relieve pain and swelling throughout the body by calming the nervous system. It also ha a positive effect against Insomnia and nightmare by placing the crystal under your bed or pillow. Amethyst is used for problem in the blood and in breathing problems. It helps overcome fears and cravings. Amethyst cluster are used to keep the air and life force in the home clean and positive.
