A unique feature of this year’s conference was its two track arrangement of sessions, comprising of mining on one side, and energy on the other. “Energy and infrastructure are extremely key to the development of new mining projects and infrastructure, which include the construction of roads and the development of new sources of power”, Said Gilbert Temba, president of the Association of mineral exploration companies (AZMEC).

As the Americans call it "Networking"

The mining stream of discussions included sessions on future development strategies for the mining sector, the regulatory framework and strategies for investing in Zambia’s booming mining sector, and new mining potential including oil & gas opportunities in Zambia.

A major obstacle standing in the way of Zambia’s industrialization efforts is the erratic supply of hydro-electric power and the countries power shortage. But fear not sizable efforts towards finding new power sources; the copper belt Energy Company(C.E.C) has initiated a sustainable energy biodiesel production project.

The biodiesel program purchases raw vegetable (Jatropha & soya) oil from small scale farmers and animal feedstock producers. The oil is processed at C.E.C owned 1 million-liters-per anum capacity refinery based in Kitwe. The project cost $300,000 to set up and is expected to be profitable in its second year of operation; it is headed by an engineer, aided by two technicians, level operators and one artisan helper. The initial market for the biodiesel is C.E.Cs internal consumption. A 20% blend can use up to 17,000 liters per month.
